Where is a good place to buy dyed colored veneers for rosettes? What I have found have been sycamore, poplar, koto, and tulipier. Does the type of wood matter for thin veneer lines and tiles?

You could buy the plain maple purfling strips and dye them yourself. Not hard and you can get the color you want.

I got my veneers from certainly wood veneer in buffalo ny. vy reasonable.Be careful if your dyeing , and use strong lightfast dyes.

If you have the capability to thin to your spec, you can get dyed veneers from Constantines. Not the best, but pretty good. I use a disk on my drill press to thin to my thickness goal. It takes some care, but works fine. Hard to go thinner than .3 mm though. LMII's dyed veneer is really nice, and they have the thin stuff. It goes a long way when making purfling lines out of it, and saves a lot of work. It doesn't go so far when laying up patterns.

Wood River Veneer and B&B Rare Woods both have a great selection of colors, but I just don't know which of the types of woods I mentioned would be best. I have gotten other veneer from B&B and was really happy with their service and the veneer, but it wasn't dyed and I don't know anything about koto or tulipier. The prices are about 1/3 of LMI

The really thin stuff you can make yourself with a very sharp Jack plane. Choose straight, easy grained stuff.
Most of the dyed veneer we get in the UK is Maple.

Thanks, I'll order some from B&B. If I want some thinner I've had good luck in the past thinning veneers in my Performax on a backer board.

I saw a violin maker who used a piece of ebony and took shavings with his plane to make the black purfling lines. It was quite impressive.
